Body of Christ art project
|
Body of Christ: noun. the Christian church. "The community of believers in which Christ is the head." I Corinthians 12:27
The project:
My vision was to paint a wall of portraits and I spent the better part of 2011 painting 18 portraits. The portraits are members of our church, St.
John the Divine Episcopal Church, and that wall of people would represent the body of Christ.
Although all Christians are part of the body of Christ, I limited my wall of portraits to people that go to our church. It is a representation of the body
of Christ. My hope was for people to stand in front of the wall of people and by recognizing fellow church members, realize and rejoice that we are
one body compromised of many parts.
1 Corinthians 12:12-14
"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all
baptized by one Spirit into one body - whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free - and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is
not made up of one part but of many."
The exhibit:
The paintings were exhibited at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 3600 River Oaks Blvd, Houston, Texas, in November and December 2011.
Most of the portraits were sold and the money from this project was donated to the church. I am most grateful for everyone who allowed me to
capture their likeness on canvas.
